Talking about Racism: Why It is Important and How to Talk about It

CE Hours 3

About this course

In this course, we will primarily focus on the findings and research of two books: The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth About Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations by psychologist Robert Livingston PhD and Jungian Reflections on Systemic Racism: Members of an American Psychoanalytic Community on Training, Practice, and Inclusivity, edited by Christopher Carter PhD and Tiffany Houck LCSW. In reviewing these books, as well as other current peer-reviewed research, we will highlight the fact that “race” does not exist, but racism does. We will emphasize the importance of Real Dialogue about racism in all groups. Some of our discussion will use Jungian terms like “archetype” and “complex,” but no familiarity with Jungian psychology is necessary. We will also discuss how to apply the Skill of Real Dialogue in difficult conversations about racism. The course will include how to talk about racism in doing psychotherapy and Dialogue Therapy, especially with people who come from different backgrounds, ethnicities, or appear to be different from the therapist.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain why races do not exist and why racism does
  • Identify why and how difficult conversations about racism enhance and increase problem-solving and new ways of relating to differences
  • Explain the need to broach difficult and sensitive topics about racism in your own relationships and organizations

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.
